The Dead Weather - "Hang You From the Heavens" (Live on Conan)

A few nights ago, new supergroup The Dead Weather made their TV debut on the new Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien. As previously reported, the band consists of Jack White (The White Stripes/The Raconteurs), Alison Mosshart (The Kills), Dean Fertita (Queens of the Stone Age), and Jack Lawrence (The Raconteurs, The Greenhornes). This time around, White hangs in the background filling the role of drummer, with Mosshart fronting, Fertita holding down guitar duties, and Lawrence on bass. It goes without saying that Jack White is one of the most talented musicians around today, but I honestly wasn't expecting him to be on drums in any band.

The clip below finds the new group performing their debut single "Hang You From the Heavens." I happened to catch this when it first aired and, I must say, it really grew on me. Initially, I felt as though this was just a tight-knit band that one might find playing the local bars and slaving away somewhere, praciticing in an stuffy garage. But as the performance progressed, it became apparent that the connection that these four have musically is quite strong, something awesome to witness. Together, they have the kind of magic that is hard to find in live bands. The performance was captivating as it was all at once incredibly fuzzed out, sleazy, ferocious, and well-executed. Mosshart has the kind of charisma and attitude that one would think could only truly be found in Detroit garage rock bands of the mid-'60s to early '70s. Lucky for us, she becomes a torchbearer for that spirit. White's drumming is infectious for its almost visceral style which gives "Hang You From the Heavens" its wild character. I know I say it a lot but this song takes on new meaning live -- definitely a band to see live.
