RIP Mark Linkous (Sparklehorse)

Mark Linkous, better known as Sparklehorse, took his own life yesterday, according to a Rolling Stone report. Linkous' exact age is not known, but he was said to be in his forties.

A statement from his family reads, "“It is with great sadness that we share the news that our dear friend and family member, Mark Linkous, took his own life today. We are thankful for his time with us and will hold him forever in our hearts. May his journey be peaceful, happy and free. There’s a heaven and there’s a star for you.”

Most recently, Linkous released Dark Night of the Soul with Danger Mouse. The album featured a wide range of singers -- such as The Shin's James Mercer and The Strokes' Julian Casablancas -- and served as the musical accompaniment to a photo book by David Lynch. It was recently announced that the album would receive a physical release this summer.

Many will recall that the album's release was held up by legal disputes with EMI. The book was released with a blank CD-R and all copies were labeled "For Legal Reasons, enclosed CD-R contains no music. Use it as you will."

Linkous made his debut as Sparklehorse in 1995 with the release of Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplo. He actually died for two minutes while touring behind this album in the U.K. after taking a mix of Valium and antidepressants. Linkous was unconscious for 14 hours with his legs pinned beneath him. The accident left him crippled and wheelchair-bound for six months.

According to his publicist, Linkous had almost completed work on a new album due on Anti- Records.
