LISTEN: HTRK - "Synthetik" + "Eat Yr Heart"
By
Quinn S.
We could go out searching for a strong melody, or close our eyes and drift away. HTRK (pronounced "Hate Rock") have an intense focus on the power of mood and texture, as evidenced by "Synthetik" and "Eat Yr Heart." There's a bliss to the atmosphere that sounds as though it's fading into a creeping shadow of dystopia. It's seductive, permeating the eardrums right into the mind -- like the romantic whisper of a warm body. And while there is undoubtedly a stream of euphoria floating throughout, the dark undertones are hard to shake. Considering that both tracks were produced in the wake of founding member and bassist Sean Stewart's suicide, it's clear that remaining members Jonnine Standish and Nigel Yang are attempting to cope with the untimely, unfortunate loss of a loved one. Beautiful and dark.
