Recommended Halloween Listening: Makeup and Vanity Set - 'Charles Park III'
By
Quinn S.
Halloween somehow crept up on us once again, which makes me rather terrified that another year has come and gone in the blink of an eye. Ok, so really I was all about allusions to Halloween in that last sentence, but, in case you've been living in a dungeon for the past few months or something, Halloween is this coming Tuesday. BOO. Aside from a soundtrack of howling wind, creaks, screams, and footsteps, music is a rather special, important piece in creating the proper Halloween atmosphere. We could wax on about all the creepy/spooky/scary/etc. music that's around, but I'd like to share an album that was just released yesterday by Nashville electronic artist Makeup and Vanity Set.
Charles Park III is 8 tracks of cold, eerie synthesizer-heavy songs that are a perfect accompaniment, a perfect soundtrack, to Halloween. It's not all gloomy and depressing -- there's a bit of that electropop energy present -- but it's certainly not something you'd listen to driving to the beach or while you hang in the sunshine. It's much like watching a horror movie in that it feels safe and inviting one moment, and then sinister, unsettling the next with the entrance of a dark synthesizer chord or tone (the piercing ring that haunts "The Faceless Man" is a perfect example). Don't be afraid, click play.
