LISTEN: Vaadat Charigim - "Where It Ends"
By
Quinn S.
A lot of people will argue that lyrics will make or break a song. You may have a fantastic instrumental, but there's only so much it can do for a song with lackluster lyrics. And so, it's always interesting to hit play on something only to be met by a language you don't speak and won't be able to comprehend. But really, when it comes down to it words are only part of the equation. The delivery -- that emotional denominator -- determines how well the singer can convey what's in his heart and on his mind. I may not understand a single word of "Where It Ends" (or "ועדת חריגים - איפה זה נגמר"), but singer and guitarist Yuval Haring (along with bassist Dan Bloch and drummer Yuval Guttmann) negate the language barrier, offering up an enjoyable, infectious slab of early '90s indie rock that splits the line between somewhere between Dinosaur Jr. and Husker Du.

LISTEN: Electra - "Coming To Get You!"

MP3: Electra - "Coming To Get You!"
Tel Aviv's Electra mix the boogie of rockabilly, the energetic thump and relentless drive of mod revivalism, and the lead riff-as-hook of surf rock. The band is spot on and sounds nearly razor sharp in their execution, making this one hell of an infectious track. When they add in supporting brass, the energy amplifies and it comes to sound increasingly articulate and direct. It kind of reminds me of this. If The Jam, The Clash, and Arctic Monkeys had a baby, it would probably sound something like this.
"Coming To Get You!" is from Electra's debut LP Heartbreaks For Fools, which is out now in Europe and out in the U.S. this summer. You can hear/download more from Electra here.
