LISTEN: Lady Lazarus

Lady Lazarus - "I Couldn't Find Myself In Anything"

MP3: Lady Lazarus - "Sick Child"

Savannah, GA's Lady Lazarus (aka Melissa Ann Sweat) understands the most moving and enthralling aspect of music is not the notes that are played, but rather the space in between those notes. Her music sounds distant, as if it was something to be admired like a cloud-painted sky. The distance makes it almost as though Lady Lazarus is saving us from the full brunt of whatever it is that inspires her charming-yet-haunting piano-centered songs. Her brand of hazy folk, composed with layers of piano and light hints of reverb, sounds like it was recorded in an attic or a 19th century, hardwood-floored home in the suburbs. It is free from congestion, from over embellishment, and free from overproduction. It is natural, intimate, welcoming, and ethereal; it is, for these reasons, filled with an understated beauty and shy eloquence.

"I Couldn't Find Myself In Anything" and "Sick Child" are from Lady Lazarus' new album, Mantic. Hear the whole thing after the jump.
