LISTEN: Planningtorock - "Doorway"

With the end of LCD Soundsystem, I've been on quite a DFA kick as of late. My first exposure to the label was The Rapture's fantastic debut LP, Echoes. At the time, I didn't really make much of a connection between band and label -- that is I didn't bother to investigate more of DFA's output -- and it wasn't until recently that I really happened to find myself checking out the label's roster and back catalog.

This leads me to introduce you to multi-instrumental and visual artist Planningtorock (nee Janine Rostron). I've only experienced one Planningtorock to rock song entitled "Doorway" -- and, yes, this is the kind of thing you experience. Rostron is about to release her sophomore album as Planningtorock, the simply titled W. She spent the past three and a half years tirelessly working on it in near solitude inside her Berlin studio. What's more, she sang and played every instrument on the new album, aside from a few contributions from Christoffer Berg, Pat Mahony and Hjörleifur Jónsson. Check out the massive, apocalyptically chilling track "Doorway" below.

The synthesizer riff that lays the foundation for "Doorway" sounds a bit apocalyptic, but it's not something that suggests inevitable doom; it's a sound that's almost soul-clenching with it's dark, piercing tone. When the synthetic horns and strings sound off, the song only gains momentum. If this song is any indication, W is going to be one of the most captivating albums of the year.

"Doorway" is from W, out May 17th on DFA.
