MP3: Palm Trees - "Rustic Debut"
Here’s a song that’s essentially simplistic in nature, but really has a lot more going on underneath the surface. The riff that opens and closes this track is one of the most addicting and entrancing things to hear. The interplay between the guitars is both an exercise in unity as well as in contrast. They move together but also take welcome turns, pulling away from one another. It’s a riff that makes for an interesting prologue and epilogue, working to bookend this well-crafted song. It’s like anxiously unwrapping a present, knowing full well what lies beneath the wrapping paper: just what you wanted. Its characterized by its jangly guitars, driving chord progression, and pensive lyrics and vocals. I'll be bold and say that I almost feel as though vocally, it sounds almost as if the Beach Boys formed an indie rock band. This song is full of tension and release and it’s one of the most satisfying and rewarding tracks I’ve had the pleasure to hear in recent months.
