LISTEN: Bluejay - Marvel Fortune

A blue jay is a beautiful bird, an animal that easily grabs your eye with its brilliant shades of blue. But there's more to the attractive surface of the blue jay. They're smart, curious, and creative birds. Maybe it's stretch to link a band's namesake to its sound, but, much like a blue jay, Brooklyn's Bluejay have an appealing sound that darts in all sorts of creative directions, not aimlessly, but rather with purpose.

What might have been a cacophonous storm of notes is organized and sealed into a taut sound, a force that moves agilely with infectious energy. And what might be most intriguing about Bluejay is that they manage a direct, singular sound while incorporating elements of afropop, indie pop, indie rock, and electropop. Along with its sprightly feel, the music possesses a certain urgency, making it irrepressibly joyous music. Maybe it's this much fun because it's earnest and unabashedly playful with lyrics and voices. Whatever the case may be, Bluejay make technically proficient, multi-layered, adventurous, new wave-tinged indie pop that's wild at heart but well-groomed and quite sharp.

All of this is highlighted on the band's new album, Marvel Fortune, out now. Check out two standout tracks below.

Bluejay - "Sort of Like An Animal"

Bluejay - "Give and Take"
