Unless you were avoiding the internet yesterday, most of you have already heard two cuts off of Wolf Parade's upcoming LP, Expo 86. Yesterday, the band/Sub Pop released "Ghost Pressure" and "What Did My Lover Say? (It Always Had to Go This Way)" as well as the release date for the album, June 29th.
I think the artwork and packaging of an album can really affect the way the music is received by the listener. So, I'll admit that Expo 86's cover really had me going from the get-go. I love the color of the photograph as well as the composition. And although Expo 86 refers to the historic World's Fair that took place in Vancouver, the style of the font and name just make me think of the now defunct baseball team -- now known as the Nationals. Confession: For some reason or other, I absolutely love the Expos logo.
Wolf Parade - "Ghost Pressure"
Of the two tracks release, this synth-heavy jam is my favorite. The interweaving guitar and synth lines make it all the more engaging, while drummer Arlen Thompson keeps things simple but exciting. It's got a melody with sort of a Far East feel. The distorted synth-line that kicks the song into gear sounds like something you might get down to in the club, but it's really a fitting piece of this song. It kicks off all mean but ends with a universal beauty.
Wolf Parade - "What Did My Lover Say? (It Always Had To Go This Way)"
This Spencer Krug-led track is a lot more guitar-oriented than the former. The guitars swim in a fair amount of reverb which helps give them a nice buoyancy. The musical theme here is not all that distant from "Ghost Pressure" but it's much more free in the direction taken by both the synths/keys and guitars. It kind of audibly documents the twist and turns that one is bound to encounter in a relationship.
Expo 86 is out June 29th via Sub Pop.
