LISTEN: Sea of Bees - "Marmalade"

(By Matthias Heiderich)

MP3: Sea of Bees - "Marmalade"

Wrapped up somewhere in the haunting alt country and folk rock sounds of "Marmalade" is the defiant stomp of a thousand buffalo trampling ground under hoof as they fly across the land under the cover of twilight. In the chorus is an uplifting spirit, fueled by a delayed guitar riff that cuts deep. It's the sound of the wind cutting apart the night. The pedal steel is the distant cry of something off, far in the distance that makes the night chilling and more than a bit surreal. Julie Ann Bee's voice is hypnotizing, filled with innocence and warmth; it's the kind of thing that calms you in the night and ensures you that you're going to be just fine.

"Marmalade" is from Sea of Bees' debut LP, Songs For the Ravens. Julie Ann Bee (aka "Jules") is the mastermind behind Sea of Bees. Aside from the drums and a few instrumental lines, Jules wrote and played everything on the new album, including handheld percussion, glockenspiel, guitar, bass, keys, marimba and slide. Many of the tracks on the record are first or second takes. Hard to deny the charm of honesty and naturality.
