According to a report on NME, Alice Glass of Crystal Castles retaliated against a male fan who allegedly groped the singer as she was crowd-surfing at the Latitude Festival in England on Saturday. She allegedly hit the audience member in the face several times.
This is a fairly gossipy story, as the whole account seems to be presented by NME without a cited source. Still, I want to share my personal opinion on the topic. As an avid concert-goer, I think it needs to be noted popular musicians crowd-surf at their own gigs more often than many realize. It is not an uncommon occurrence at shows by energetic indie or electronic artists. Emily Haines of Metric has a wickedly commanding stage presence -- and is a confirmed crowd-surfer. The singer of Dillinger Escape Plan takes a somewhat different approach, but clearly gets down with fans all the same.
The point I am trying to make is that whether or not you support the act of crowd-surfing, or think it's fun, there is a culture behind it. And it doesn't invite fans to purposely touch crowd-surfers inappropriately, regardless of gender. Crowd-surfers should prepare for it, as it does happen, but on the other hand, fans who go out of their way to grope someone are certainly asking for physical retaliation. Or as Alice Glass reportedly put it: "You touch my tits, I kick you in the fucking head."
