LISTEN: Great Deceivers - "Strange Death"

By Max Wanger

Great Deceivers - "Strange Death"

It's the beauty in the clouds, the beauty in the shade. There is something you want to say, but you can never bring yourself to say it. Instead, you admire from afar, leaving the future to play out in your thoughts and dreams. You never look directly at things, you look at their reflections and their shadows. You gather details based on the little things that everyone always overlooks and takes for granted. It's a love song filled with hope, but also an underlying sense of doubt. But before such emotions and thoughts become too much of a burden, they are cast off into a sea of reverb, carried by the crisp whisper of ride cymbal hits. Remember, in the end we're never truly alone -- we'll always have our thoughts and dreams. In the twinkle of interwoven guitar lines and the wind of cymbals, don't forget to stare up at the sky and realize where you are and what's going on.

Great Deceivers tell folk tales roughed up and driven by garage rock that are also, occasionally, wrapped in the embrace of shoegaze and enlivened by the dynamic ranges of jazz.
