Philip Selway - "By Some Miracle"
Q: What does a drummer say before he's kicked out of a band?
A: "Hey guys, why don't we try one of my songs?"
Ah yes, drummer jokes. Drummer jokes, however, are not at all applicable in this case -- not in the very least.
Philip Selway, drummer for that little band called Radiohead, is stepping out from behind his drum kit and the shadow of Radiohead, releasing his debut solo album entitled Familial. The album is out at the end of this month and features Lisa Germano, former Soul Coughing bassist Sebastian Steinberg, Wilco drummer Glenn Kotche and multi-instrumental Patrick Sansone. "By Some Miracle" is the intro track and proves that Selway is quite a songwriter. The song has that recognizable quiet, awe-inspiring beauty characteristic in so much of Radiohead's music. In any other musician's hands, such an effect would come across as an effort to emulate, but here, it proves Selway has always played a significant, albeit understated, role in Radiohead's music. "By Some Miracle" is the unspoken magnificence of the world; the kind of thing communicated in a whisper so as to keep the treasures of life's intricacies sacred.
Familial Tracklisting:
1) By Some Miracle
2) Beyond Reason
3) A Simple Life
4) All Eyes on You
5) The Ties That Bind Us
6) Patron Saint
7) Falling
8) Broken Promises
9) Don't Look Down
10) The Witching Hour
Yes, this song has been out for some time now, but I wanted to share it with anyone who hadn't heard it yet. Enjoy.
