A Song I Fell In Love With...The Radio Dept.'s "Heaven's on Fire"

MP3: The Radio Dept. - "Heaven's on Fire"
(via Labrador Records)

A friend shared this record with me a few weeks ago, and ever since, I've been hooked. The track that really got me was "Heaven's on Fire". It starts off with Thurston Moore talking about how big business and capitalism is destroying rock 'n' roll and youth culture. What follows isn't exactly a punk rock anthem for the masses. Instead, it breaks into this breezy jam that's so damn catchy, thanks largely in part to the cheery synth riff -- a hook in its own right. It's a really well arranged track, with additions of piano, indie pop guitar, and a saxophone passage that brings the song to a triumphant end. A song for overcast mornings like the one we have in Baltimore right now. The kind of song that brings hope and light to any situation.

BUY: "Heaven's on Fire" is from The Radio Dept.'s new album Clinging to a Scheme. It's out now on Labrador Records. Pick it up here.
