Sometimes, the true mark of a great songwriter is how the person approaches the music by paying careful consideration to tempo, volume, and tone – a soft swell here, a heavy kick drum hit there, and a cycling guitar riff pure in tone right here. It’s almost a science when it comes down to it for how delicately it all comes together. It’s something truly awe-inspiring when the collage of sounds surrounds you as it mixes together, forming something full of mood and texture.
We Only Said work in such a way. Their music possesses a melancholic beauty that twists and turns, rises and falls. With rhythmic shifts and guitars working with and against one another, the music is full of tension and release. It’s post-rock meets math rock, full of intricacies and well-arranged layers. From a quiet night to a stormy sky, We Only Said are thoughtful to how the little things, like a short pause or minor chord, can drastically change the music. They are a band that rewards the careful listener with their careful attention to detail. It calls to mind Denali, Engine Down, and Mogwai, striking and resilient with an understated confidence.
We Only Said is a project lead by Florian Marzano, guitarist in the 8-guitar ensemble of Olivier Mellano’s Pink Iced Club as well as the band Trunks, alongside Laetitia Shériff. The band is based out of Rennes, France.
