Jhameel - "The Human Condition"
Imagine a song featuring afropop guitar (a la Vampire Weekend) run through a funk filter, triumphant brass, Michael Jackson's vocal athleticism, and Prince's sense of rhythm -- not to mention vocals that sound like a cross between Jackson and Prince. Take this, and you've got multi-instrumentalist Jhameel's "The Human Condition." It's emphatic funk that is so on point, each snare hit feels like a high-five. It's pop that isn't suffocated by over production: the drums are real and the guitars maintain a warm, tube amp quality. What we have here is a display of unadulterated talent, someone who gives everything and hides behind nothing. Jhameel displays a mastery over rhythm and arrangement, never making it feel as though a second on "The Human Condition" is unnecessary or unimportant. What's more, Jhameel is responsible for everything you are hearing, having played every instrument here and on his new album.
San Francisco's Jhameel (a name provided by a Lebanese housemate in college) is of Japanese, Korean, and Mongolian descent and is skilled in Arabic, Spanish, Korean, and Russian. With this kind of background, it's not surprising that his music and words have the ability to transcend language and cultural barriers; another example of how music is the only true universal language. He's well on his way to conquering the pop spectrum like Jackson and Prince before him. This is one artist that is only going to get bigger...and bigger.
"The Human Condition" is from Jhameel's latest album of the same name. And guess what? You can download the whole thing for FREE (but donations are accepted and appreciated) right here.
Jhameel has also gained some attention for his cover of T-Pain's "Buy You A Drank," which you can check out below.
