LISTEN: Rewards - "Equal Dreams" (Feat. Solange Knowles) b/w "Asleep With The Lights On"

Rewards (Aaron Pfenning, Co-Founder of Chairlift) just debuted an Eddie Mars remix of his recent 12" single "Equal Dreams" over at Pitchfork. Today, though, I'd like to share the original with you as well its companion tracks.

The 12", which was released this summer on DFA, features "Equal Dreams," an instrumental cut of "Equal Dreams," and B-side "Asleep With The Lights On." Solange Knowles, who seems to have a second life these days as a sort of indie* music diva collaborating with the likes of of Montreal, Chromeo, and Theophilus London, appears on "Equal Dreams" to give the song a commanding, and alluring, female presence. Pfenning layers Knowles voice, and it ends up creating a rather dreamy feeling mixed with his array of synthesizers. It's equal parts fun, catchy, and deeply sensual. "Asleep With The Lights On" is a lot more straightforward, running with a pure '80s pop sound that would fit right in between Depeche Mode and Duran Duran.

*Indie seems to really be a catchall term anymore, as Tom Breihan of Stereogum recently noted. Two of the three artists I mentioned are signed to major labels, but they kind of operate on the periphery of the major label field. The word alternative, it seems, is now almost interchangeable with indie, because both terms have come to represent a diverse range of musical styles.
