What Laura Says...is something beautiful

What Laura Says - July 23

What Laura Says is a five-piece from Tempe, Arizona. The group first existed as the acoustic duo of Danny Godbold (keys, guitar, vocals) and James Mulhern (guitar, percussion, vocals). In 2006, Danny and James were joined by Greg Muller (drums), Mitch Freedom (bass), and (Jacob Woolsey (percussionist, "various weirdness" as the band says) rounding out the line-up.

Everything's casually stepping in between as well as on the beat. It feels calculated, and yet maintains this sense of freedom. All the instruments complement one another, and in a way, introduce each other, too. It's a subtle action, but works to great effect. It's characterized by a laid back vibe; a hypnotic vibe.

It makes you feel like you’ve gone swimming, deep beneath the surface. From the bottom, you look up to see the water’s interpretation of what the sky looks like. The loose nature of the song is just like the flow of the water around your body. With headphones on, it feels less like you're listening to a song and more like you are actually in the song. Don't believe me? Wait until those guitars come in to your left and right.

"July 23" is from Thinks and Feels out 8/19/08 on Terpsikhore.
