REVIEW: The Postelles - White Night EP

The Postelles - White Night EP
MMM

The Postelles are likely to draw comparisons to their fellow New Yorkers The Strokes, but I'd like to think their sound is something more like this: The Kooks meet The Strokes in a downtown NYC club...and then Buddy Holly walks in. While their garage rock/pop sound may not be entirely original, they manage to give themselves an edge with a shot of '50s-style rock 'n' roll -- the kind that's clean cut on the surface, but more wild underneath.

The strength of these songs is their overall construction, with hook-laden group harmonies, cranked tube amplifiers, and punchy-yet-slick, well-placed bass lines. The band knows how to craft solid rock/pop gems that play with the past but are just as relevant in the present day. Honestly...I really want to give this EP four M's just for the whammy bar ending of the solo in "Looking Glass."

This 3-song EP comes off as more of a tease than anything else. The Postelles' debut LP is expected in the coming months. And hearing these songs, the band only has one direction left to go: up.

The White Night EP is out today on iTunes. It comes with a bonus remix of "Sleep On the Dance Floor" by Grizzly Bear's Chris Taylor.
