"Who's Your Muse?" alum and Mixtape Muse favorite Cheyenne Marie Mize is set to release her sophomore album, Among the Grey, the follow-up to 2010's Before Lately. Kevin Ratterman (My Morning Jacket, Andrew Bird) co-produced the record with Mize on the grounds of a church Mize's base of Louisville. It's the first release of new music since last year's most excellent We Don't Need EP and will be released through Yep Roc on June 25th. Paste Magazine premiered the album's title track yesterday. Hear it below.
There were definitely hints that Mize was headed in a heavier direction on We Don't Need, and it's great to hear her letting lose, experimenting more with her sound after the sound of her more folk-based, laid back debut album. If there's one thing that always electrifies Mize's work -- outside of her voice -- it's her ambition. And "Among the Grey" is a perfect example of how she's not afraid to take risks with her sound, effortlessly moving from folk to pop to rock to whatever else she damn well pleases. Some of the best songwriters are the ones that can't be pigeonholed, the kind that sound eclectic without seeming lost, or misguided. Cheyenne Marie Mize is that type of songwriter.
"Among the Grey" is rooted in an understated southern mystique with its distorted guitars wind-whipped with reverb, turned up to sound as big as the Blue Ridge Mountains are long. It's ruminative but also feels rather liberating at the same time. If this is an indication of what's to come, Among the Grey is sure to be an album you won't want to miss.
