Killer Mike and El-P Make Run the Jewels, Offer Up LP for Free Download

With new albums from Kanye West and Jay-Z dropping recently, there are a lot of hip hop releases that, unfortunately, will most likely get overshadowed because of the storm of hype that sets over the industry. Personally, having listened to a number of tracks from both Yeezus and Magna Carta Holy Grail, I feel like the hype is a bit unwarranted. I'm not saying there aren't elements of each that are solid, but, overall, they're not quite the standouts people are making them out to be -- especially when you consider what Ye and Jay have already released. There's no denying either MC's skills on the mic and leadership in the studio, but I guess I was expecting more from each release.

One of the many new hip hop releases that may indeed get overshadowed by Yeezus and Magna Carta Holy Grail is Run the Jewels' self-titled debut. Made up of Atlanta MC Killer Mike and Brooklyn MC El-P, let's just go ahead and say it's hip hop super duo. This might as well be another Watch the Throne, only difference being that Killer Mike and El-P aren't constantly rapping about all their money, designer threads, and cars -- they grab from a bigger palette of subject matter. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of Kanye and Jay-Z. But for as great and enjoyable as their Watch the Throne was, the title seemed to be more of a reference to their wealth whereas Killer Mike and El-P's record is just a dazzling display of sharp rhymes and flows that make a run for that rap throne. Of course, I'm typing this as I listen to Run the Jewels for just the second time, but it's clear that it's deserving of some of that Ye/Jay hype.
