On For Emma, Forever Ago, Justin Vernon made a grand debut for Bon Iver, crafting one of the most intimate and profound records of the past few years. That record was deep and engaging due to Vernon's courage to bare his soul, opening himself to the world. He seemed to spare nothing when it came to conveying how he felt -- even if it was often shrouded in a bit of poetic mystique. One could easily get swept away in the album's pensive mood and honest sound.
The same can be said about the new self-titled Bon Iver album, except this time Vernon and co. have experimented with the acoustic-based sound of the debut. Where before Bon Iver was about opening up a man's heart and soul to provide a window into his life, Bon Iver works to create a world in and of itself. The biggest difference on the new album is the incorporation of a smooth, tender, '80s aesthetic and a consistent use of synthesizers. It's an album that's much more textured and atmospheric than For Emma. Considering Bon Iver's past success, it's great to hear Vernon experimenting and taking a risk. Throw on some headphones, hit play, and close your eyes.
