A few years back, singer/songwriter Sharon Van Etten quietly crept up on all of us, sharing with us an unassuming yet utterly enthralling brand of folk rock. My introduction to her came in the form of her debut Daytrotter session, which I found rather magical: a single voice and guitar creating such moving, interesting songs. I recently caught her latest single, "Serpents," on the radio, which really has me excited to hear her forthcoming third album Tramp. Not only that, it's knocked some sense into me to finally dive into her past work. Check out "Serpents" as well as Van Etten's last two full-lengths in their entirety below.
MP3: Sharon Van Etten - "Serpents"
Each year, it seems, there's always one or two songs that have this indescribable magnetism to them. In 2009 it was Heartless Bastards' "The Mountain," and in 2012 it looks like it's "Serpents." Ok, so really it's just that I have a deep affinity for slide guitar and pedal steel, especially when there's a good bit of reverb involved. But slide aside, Van Etten demonstrates a near haunting tone that's sure to ensnare you much like, well, a serpent would. And when she sings with such heartfelt inflection, all hope is lost. "Serpents" is a crushing ode to empowerment and the strength to carry on.
