LISTEN: Hectorina - "Lost Weekend Waltz" // "Jonah, King of the Space Program

Googling the name "Hectorina" won't really tell you much about the name or its significance. Instead, you'll probably learn a lot about baby names. What's a Hectorina? Who's Hectorina? Well, this particular Hectorina is a 3-piece math/psych/surf/indie rock outfit out of Charlotte, NC, fronted by Dylan Gilbert (someone I've failed to write about for roughly 3 or 4 years, forgive me) with ex-members of Dylan Gilbert & The Over Easy Breakfast Machine and Linus Van Pelt. The band's been working on a rock opera, which, based on these two songs, sounds like quite an exciting curveball -- at least in regards to what one might qualify as a "rock opera." Check it.

If you're headed for disaster, you might as well have fun as you travel towards it. Peppered with instrumental breaks and refrains that possess a rather carnivalesque tone, "Lost Weekend Waltz" sounds like a rush of some nasty deja vu -- memories rushing back, reminding you of that crazy 3-day stretch you'd almost buried. With math rock agility, '50s garage rock charm, and surf rock momentum, it's adventurous in its own right and anything but predictable.

"Jonah, King of the Space Program" is over before you can microwave last night's leftovers, but you'd never notice with all of the action it manages to pack into its wily frame. When placed next to "Lost Weekend Waltz," it's a bit of a sonic departure, but no less exciting and zestful. With horns blaring and spacey echoes shooting throughout, Jonah's Space Program sounds like something fun, creative, and maybe even a little wacky, sort of like the feel of the original "Flash Gordon" from the 1930s. At its heart though, this song is a great cut of power pop-meets-garage rock.
