LISTEN: Lushlife Shares "Big Sur" From New LP

One of my favorite releases of last year was Philly MC Lushlife's fantastic mixtape No More Golden Days. As an introduction to his music, it made a pretty long-lasting impression and got me excited for what was next. Well, what's next is the release of his new LP, Plateau Vision, featuring guest spots from Styles P, Heems, Andrew Cedermark, Shad, and others. From that comes "Big Sur," which you can spin below.

Lushlife - "Big Sur"

Over a rhythm section mixing R&B-tinged funk and soul and what sounds like samples of a harp, Lushlife proves his flow is relentless and sharp. It solidifies him as a rapper that crosses a modern day realism -- laying down genuine, smart rhymes -- with an old school spirit and flavor. He sounds like the past teaching the present and future how it is and how it should be. Sharing his thoughts and feelings isn't a matter of desperation or an attempt to appear pretentious -- it's not bravado as much as it is the soul opening up. Instead, Lushlife sounds like a man who isn't truly alive unless he's speaking his mind -- and music is his way of doing that absolutely, completely, and honestly. When you hear him rap, you hear his heart and you hear his soul.

Plateau Vision is out April 17th digitally as well as on CD and vinyl through Western Vinyl. If you missed No More Golden Days, hear and download it below.
