SEE & HEAR: Father John Misty - "Hollywood Cemetery Forever Sings"

As you may have already heard, Baltimore native* Josh (or J) Tillman recently left Fleet Foxes. It would appear the move was made to pursue is solo career full-time. Tillman has already released seven full-length albums under his own name and is now gearing up to release his debut LP for Sub Pop as Father John Misty. The album, titled Fear Fun, will be released on May 1st.

MP3: Father John Misty - "Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings"

I first heard about the project on KEXP when the station spun this song. I've always been a big fan of songs that, while simple in nature (i.e. just a distorted electric guitar and drums), sound incredibly deep, powerful, and descriptive; the sparse instrumentation takes advantage of the space and gives the listener a chance to see straight to the soul of the song. On "Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings," Tillman sounds reminiscent of Mark Kozelek, specifically Kozelek's work with Sun Kil Moon. With just an electric guitar, consistent beat, and a plaintive delivery, Tillman proves that Fleet Foxes won't be his claim to fame, it will simply be a chapter in a prolific -- and long-lasting -- career as a great songwriter.

Check out the video for the track below, featuring "Parks & Recreation" star Aubrey Plaza.

Also, how about another track from Fear Fun? This one is more orchestrated and sees Tillman going for a bit of a '70s-style with piano, a string section, and more acoustic-based instrumentation.
