REVIEW: The Golden Hands Before God... - Here

The Golden Hands Before God... - Here
MMM

Here is heavily in debt to the 1960s, with both its rollicking rock ‘n’ roll nature and its moments of more laid back acoustic fare steeped in psychedelia. The guitars are ferocious and beg to be outside of the speakers on songs such as “One Fine Morning” and “Communist Party” and have wild character reminiscent of Neil Young. It would have been nice to hear the guitar leads venture off a bit more from their path on a few songs. Repetition can often ruin the magic of a riff and sometimes it can keep the listener’s interest by not radically altering the vibe of the song. Generally, the case tends to be the latter on Here.

This E.P. certainly leaves you wanting more, especially because it presents a band with a lot of potential. The music is familiar in how much it draws from the past but this often works in favor of the band. It’s an inviting sound, and though not entirely original, it helps the band to hold its own over the entirety of this seven-song E.P. Here is promising and a strong introductory offering. It is easy to imagine yourself spinning this extended-player as you hang out underneath the stars on a quiet night with friends, remembering all that has been and is (“Blood of November”) or feeling yourself become enriched with a full-body jubilation that “hell-yeah” you are alive (“Communist Party”). If this E.P. tells me anything, it’s that rock ‘n’ roll is still alive.

Recommended Tracks: “Communist Party,” “Girl Half My Age,” “The Ladder”
