The Americans - "The Antidote"
If Belle & Sebastian re-imagined themselves as a soul/R&B band, I believe the sound wouldn't be too far off from The Americans' "The Antidote." It's a tightly-knit tune, backed by the magical brass of the Dap-Kings. The Americans marry their influences well, exuding an old school feel -- and a jazz sort of cool. They even manage to fit in a '70s-style guitar solo without compromising the song's soul charms. With the Dap-Kings support, "The Antidote" switches moods without losing the song's sharp consistency.
"The Antidote" is from The Americans' new The White EP. It's not completely indicative of the EP's overall sound (it's not all strictly soul/R&B), but if you dig the song, you'll dig the EP. It features Daniel Merriweather on first track "Try (Nobody Wants To)" as well as Sean Lennon on closer "Requiem" (Lennon also produced the track). It's out February 2011. Band founder, London-born, Paris-raised, Charlie Klarsfeld (vocals, guitars, keys and producer), says that the objective of the band is to "unite for the common purpose of making great pop records and put on mind/body/soul blowing shows.” I guess you could say, they're a soul rock 'n' roll/soul-pop band, or an R&B-infused indie rock band.
