LISTEN: The Thermals - "Never Listen To Me"

By Thomas Oliver

MP3: The Thermals - "Never Listen To Me"

A perfect example of how The Thermals new record, Personal Life, is anchored by Kathy Foster's bass; it's her steady riffing that makes all the difference. As I wrote in my review of the new album, the power chord fury that has characterized the band's previous albums takes more of a back seat ride on Personal Life, as illustrated by this track. The chorus is catchy and retains a fair amount of power despite really only being built upon the basic instrumentation of bass and drums. By subtracting the guitar, The Thermals boil down the song to its core, exposing its raw emotion. Hutch Harris cuts in during instrumental breaks with pensive guitar riffs that add just the right amount of color to a song that's upbeat and catchy even with its dark undertones.

The "Never Listen To Me" single/7" is out now and comes with B-side "There Is Always A Reason."
