What is it to be punctual? It takes a certain awareness to recognize appropriate cues, or timing. When it comes to music, being “punctual,” I would say, would be aligned with a distinction in pace. It’s something best illustrated in the dialogue between instruments – how a beat defines the rhythm of guitar, which in turn defines the placement of a vocal melody. There’s an obvious difference between an aggressively-strummed chord progression racing neck-in-neck with a fast drumbeat and a chord progression that speaks democratically, back and forth with a drumbeat.
Star Chart, the latest release from Brooklyn's Strange Shapes, is a collection of songs defined by a musical dialogue between two guitars, a bass, and drums. All the instruments reveal themselves to be, individually, rather divergent, but, as a whole, they connect to create a sound that takes the shimmering tones of surf rock and mixes in the charming spirit of ‘80s power pop (a la Big Star) and the rhythmic twists and turns of post-punk (a la Television). As if a realization of their name, Strange Shapes work a combination of diverse riffs and beats together without ever sounding cacophonous. The prism of sounds that shines throughout Star Chart is a testament to the band’s collective mindset, their musical union. Strange Shapes are smart and creative, challenging themselves musically without sacrificing or diluting the sum of their parts: bright, harmonious music.
