Xenia Rubinos - "Help"
Small club, maybe Chicago? It's sweltering outside, but that doesn't touch the sticky heat inside the venue. Unexpectedly, she opens her mouth and it's all soulful jazz. The heat slowly fades to welcomed cool, and then her voice opens the door for some pounding, distorted organ and a stuttering march of a beat. Now, it's burning in here! And then I notice it's not the weather that's getting to me, it's my excitement over what I'm hearing -- really, what I'm experiencing. What is this? It's visceral while still radiating this brilliant warmth and beauty. And it plays out like an amalgamation of jazz, avant garde, pop, and post-punk. There isn't a whole lot out there right now that toys with convention and succeeds at such a high level, but Xenia Rubinos is an exception.
"Help" is from Xenia Rubinos' new album Magic Trix. It's excellent. Imagine a jam session between St. Vincent, Denali, Tune-Yards, and Ava Luna and you'll begin to get an idea of what the wonderful Xenia Rubinos creates.
