Country has always seemed to possess this bold-faced, defiant spirit in one way or another. It's the soundtrack of man hardened by the isolation of the road, by the distance between two hearts. With those three chords and the truth, country has always been about tackling reality directly, showing no fear in telling it like it is. In the tough truths of life, it's not hard to find solace and reassurance. With its relative simplicity and raw character, a country tune reveals the reality to be a lot more agreeable and satisfying in the end than anything else could ever be.
Sonny Smith nearly drowned off the coast of Northern California. The water tried to pull him down, to rest with the ocean floor, but Sonny survived. In the struggle with the water, he was baptized and returned to shore with a new vitality, one that left him with an ocean of inspiration. Sonny wound up producing a play, a novel, and a stack of songs. Adelard the Drowned, the novel, broke up into 100 pieces and served as the launchpad for the "100 Records" project. Four of those pieces come as songs on a new 7" E.P. that deals with themes of water and death.
