LISTEN: Yojimbo Billions - "Collapsed, Unloaded"

Ever since I saw Drive last month I've been trying to track down a physical copy of the official soundtrack, composed by one Cliff Martinez (Fun Fact: he was the drummer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers for a few years in the '80s). I finally ended up having to order it on Amazon, and it arrived in the mail yesterday. This particular soundtrack is absolutely fantastic and has kind of sparked an interest in the field of soundtracks. I spun the Drive soundtrack driving to $1 Beer Night last evening, and it was definitely a bit of a surreal experience.

This all brings me to Yojimbo Billions' "Collapsed, Unloaded."

A panacea -- that's what this is. When you've been gutted and feel like the ground is at a higher level than you are, a song like this picks you up and eradicates any trace of sorrow. With an elastic beat and a synthesized noise that sounds like a manipulated sonar ping, "American Mourning" is fun and carefree, filled with mostly unintelligible lyrics. In fact, the vocals sound as if they are being transmitted from underwater. It's this lack of lyrical description, and coherency, that allows the song to free itself from emotional and thematic classification -- and why it fits nearly any mood imaginable. A listen through this underwater adventure is, in an inadvertent way, rather rejuvenating. Take a dive.
