Sam Fogarino, drummer of Interpol, said a little while back that the new Interpol album was a return to the sound of the band's debut LP, Turn On the Bright Lights. Then, not long after that statement was made, frontman Paul Banks claimed that the new record would not sound anything like their debut. The closest thing this song has to the band's older material is its use of the word "Lights." While it may not be surprising to catch Interpol sounding anthemic, the song marks a sound that's a bit of a departure from the band's more angular sound of the past -- the kind that's more akin to Joy Division than a more melancholic U2. That's not to say that this song is bad. I figure it'll be a grower for most people. It doesn't have the immediacy or attack of songs like "PDA" or "Evil" but it develops into a sort of symphony of single-noted guitar lines and layered percussion.
"Lights" is from Interpol's as-yet-untitled new album that is scheduled for release in the new few months.
