LISTEN: Foo Fighters Share First Single "Rope" from New Album, Wasting Light

Well, if you haven't figured it out by now, the Foo Fighters are set to release their seventh studio LP on April 12. What has yet to be mentioned here on MM is that the new album will be entitled Wasting Light. The title comes from a lyric on album track "Miss the Misery". We've already heard "White Limo" and now we have the first official single, "Rope," for your listening pleasure above.

Considering the teasers for Wasting Light, "Rope" isn't quite as heavy as I was expecting, but that doesn't mean it's not heavy. The verses are a bit of a stylistic change for the Foos, playing with an understated jazz influence. The choruses are pure Foo and the break is certainly heavy a la '70s hard rock -- you're bound to lose your face to the guitar solo. The bridge kicks off with a short but sweet collection of great Taylor Hawkins drum fills, and kicks into some seriously hard-hitting chord riffing.

I grew up listening to this band's music, and they were one of first bands I really connected with at an early age. Considering they're using guitar solos, rocking hard, and sticking to their guns, playing what they want (and recording in Dave's garage), I have to say I'm pretty pleased the Foos are still kicking and not mellowing out. After Echoes, Silence, Patience, & Grace and the disappointing "Wheels" and "Word Forward" included on their greatest hits album, I wouldn't have expected them to head in this direction. I love it. I've listened to "Rope" at an unhealthy volume about 10 times now.
